Key factors to export Spanish wine to international markets

Exporting Spanish wine abroad has been an upward trend for several decades. Today, wine companies continue to focus on the internationalization of their products and seek innovative alternatives to open up to new markets, some of them not previously explored by our national wines.

In this sense, according to data from the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OEMV), in the first eleven months of last year 2019, Spain exported 990 million boxes of packaged wines, which translates into approximate revenues of 2,000 million euros .

Analyzing these figures, there was a slight increase in volume of 0.4% compared to the previous year. In comparison with Spain, only Canada and Japan, and to a lesser extent Mexico, managed to improve in the final stretch of November and December 2019, compared to the sharp falls in Germany, China and the Netherlands.

What should be taken into account in the export of Spanish wines?

The companies that decide to start the complicated, and at the same time fruitful, adventure of selling their wines in other countries must, first of all, know very well the business and the structure of their own company. In addition, it is essential to be very clear about the capabilities and needs that may appear during the development of the export project itself.

Export wine: country of destination

Another of the most important aspects is the destination to which the wine is going to be exported. Not all countries have the same market opportunities, since in each of them there are very different tastes regarding drinks.

From a perspective applicable to Spanish wines, some of the most interesting countries for export are currently the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and Japan. Once this aspect is defined, barriers to entry to that country must also be assessed, as there may be additional costs that had not been initially considered.

In addition, in each place there may be specific conditions regarding the wine market and they are not problems that can be easily solved from a distance. Therefore, we must try to have all the best tied possible.

Wine export documents: transport

On the other hand, the way in which the wines will arrive to the different reception countries is also fundamental. For this task, there are specialized transport companies that guarantee good conditions of temperature, light and layout, keeping each of the bottles in perfect condition.

Wine export and currency Exchange

As in any business, its economic profitability is what determines the possibility of continuing or not moving forward. If a Spanish wine company decides to start exporting its wines, it must also consider the possibility that their income will arrive in another foreign currency, not in euros. On some occasions, this currency exchange can be beneficial, and on others, on the contrary, causing losses.

Experts in the field: are they really necessary?

The answer is yes. If you have any questions when starting your career abroad, it is recommended that you contact expert advisors to help you with all the procedures you must carry out for the expansion of your wine company.

For example, in most Asian countries, the marketing methods are quite complicated, since, in some destinations such as Japan, the most common is the marketing through very closed tradings and specialized in wine and retail sale is in deregulation phase.
