Know the main flavors of fruits in wine
In previous blog entries, we have tried different concepts that are essential, or highly recommended, when choosing a good wine. However, in the following information, we will focus on another very interesting and curious issue at the same time: how to choose depending on the main fruit flavors in the wine. In this sense, when a wine is described in a winetasting, words such as weight or body are used, together with other recognizable nuances such as acidity, minerality, pungent taste, heat of alcohol or tannins. All of them are in charge of forging the authentic personality of a broth. However, there are some protagonists of exception in the different aromas and flavors of wine: fruits. Indeed, as we know, the grape is a very curious and heterogeneous fruit, which has several peculiarities. For example, it is fully capable of metabolizing the essence of the soil in which it grows, acquiring its different nuances as an essential part of its flavor. In this way, we encourage you to discover some of the most typical fruit flavors that you can find in wine.
Fresh citrus flavours
First of all, you should know that it is very common to find this type of flavor, especially in white wines. Interestingly, the citrus notes obtained during the tasting are part of the grape’s own flavor, although they usually disappear during fermentation and reappear after passing through the barrel and aging. Although the citrus nuances of a wine can be appreciated in its aroma, it is also common to find them in the flavor. Therefore, the most common citrus fruits of a wine are the lemon, which provides a pleasant sensation of acidity; the orange, very similar to the previous one, but with some subtle sweet touches; the grapefruit, which adds a slightly bitter trace in the mouth; and the lime, which is, of all of them, the most dry and refreshing fruit.
Tropical fruit flavours
As strange as it may seem, tropical is also a taste of fruit that you can find in a glass of wine. As a trick so that you can recognize it and identify it correctly, focus on the flavor it leaves in your mouth, with a light and brief sweet taste, even if it is a dry wine. Therefore, one of the grapes that better represents and gives body to this type of wine with flavors of pineapple and tropical fruits is Chardonnay. On the other hand, the Verdejo and Sauvignon blanc grapes are not left behind either, as they are positioned with a clear tropical fruit accent, although, in this case, something more varied, leaving the door open to flavors such as mango and passion fruit.
Flavors of fruits of creeping origin: strawberry, raspberry and blackberry
We could not forget the red wines and their characteristic flavors, those that can be perceived in combination with the primary aromas, in a very simple way. Therefore, red fruits are present among their predominant fruit flavors. At the time of recognizing them, it is enough to notice the aftertaste that they leave in the mouth. One of the most common in red wines is the cherry, although there are many others equally characteristic, such as strawberry and raspberry, which are usually identified with the Tempranillo grape and the Garnacha grape. In relation to this matter, the strawberry usually has a predominant role in rosé wines and young red wines, especially in the denominations of origin Rioja, Priorato and Ribera de Duero. Other flavors of fruit in the wine … something peculiar Finally, the range of references in the world of fruit and its relationship with wine does not end here. On many other occasions, it is not uncommon to find wines with notes of green apple, whose acidity is quite close to that provided by the lemon, but with several points less intensity. It will be easy to find these nuances, for example, in the wines made using the famous and characteristic Galician Albariño grape.
